Its summer time and if the heat is forcing u to stay indoors there couldnt be a better time to pick up a nice book and get going.Really the joys obtained from reading are quite unmatched.Think i will share my favorite books with u.
My all time favorite is the one written by Dominique Lapierre .The title of the book is "Freedom at Midnight". The book is set in the year 1947 and gives a rivetting account of India's struggle to freedom,as also the complications and the politics involved in the entire process.Especially enlighteneing for me was the potrayal of Gandhi.Having read the book I can say that I have begun to understand and appreciate better Gandhis enormous contribution to Indias freedom struggle.Unfortunately, belittling Gandhi has become some sort of a habit, and I can only pity those souls. The descriptions of the lifestyle led by the Indian princes and the kings gives us a glimpse into the richness and the grandeur of that era.The book also deals extensively with the partition and the migration. For my generation, whose knowedge of our freedom struggle is often limited to that in the history books, reading the book was a eye opener. The narrative style kept me spell bound throughout. So much so that I re-read it 3 more times and I am sure there are at least a couple of more to go.
Another inspiring book is the autobiography of Lee Iacocca.Fired abruptly from Ford,Lee took over an ailing car company and helped it get back on track .From his humble beginnings to his heydays at Ford, from the shocking exit at Ford to the rise of Chrysler,Iacoccas story appears to be larger than life.He seems to have lived many lives all in the same lifetime. His story is bound to inspire all who read it.
While these 2 are my favorite I also have a liking for PG Wodehouse novels.Jeeves is my favorite fictional character and I guess Forrest Gump should run a close second.Thats another of my favorite novels.
I also enjoy reading magazines like India Today. These days I read it on the net (Sic).Curently I am reading "The Fountainhead" by Ayn Rand and also "Snapshots from hell".The later book by Peter Robinson is a account of the authors life as a MBA student at Stanford.A light reading with a lot of hidden meaning.
I hope u will enjoy these books. Go aheadread them and have a blast!!
